What is the Pelvic Floor?

The pelvic floor is comprised of the deepest muscle layers and ligaments of the core. These muscles act as the foundation for all bodily movements, as well as, provide support to the pelvic organs such as the intestines, bladder and bowel. Additionally, the pelvic floor is responsible for maintaining continence. 

Pelvic Floor Dysfunction occurs when the pelvic muscles become tensed or weaken. This may be the result of scar restriction from prior surgery, chronic low back pain, poor bladder and bowel habits, pelvic fractures, and pregnancy/childbirth complications. 

Symptoms of dysfunction may present as leakage with sneezing, coughing, lifting, and exercise, overactive bladder, colorectal conditions, and chronic pelvis and low back pain. 

Like other voluntary skeletal muscles, the pelvic floor responds well to exercise and can be strengthened to alleviate or decrease symptoms of dysfunction.
